![]() It begins very well with "As Far As I Can See" which appears primed to topple into Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World", though thankfully it doesn't and "Buried Alive" is a great song underpinned by a brilliant string-powered arrangement. This collection concerning the break up of a marriage, a heavyweight topic if ever there was yet he's managed to retain the tunes and never loses sight of the influences and stimuli that made James so interesting. Front man Tim Booth has returned with a third solo album. James were always an excellent art-pop band, with an uncanny knack for both melody and killer hooks. ![]() Highly recommended for all folk and acoustic lovers. Great for when you have friends around or when driving in the car. Nicely produced though and the best collection of songs you can get without buying all his individual albums (although I would urge you to go and buy them too).īest songs for me are "Falling Free (2016 Version)", "A Clean Pair Of Eyes", "Falling Down The Mountainside", "Twilight" & "Shine (25th Anniversary Version)" ![]() It would have been nice to hear songs like "Debauchery" or "Birds Without Wings" given a dusting but you can't fit them all on I suppose. The thing about David Gray is that some of his best songs were actually on the early albums before 'White Ladder' and a lot of people wouldn't even hear them to realise this if he didn't release a collection like this one. With some of his oldest songs given a face lift which is nice to hear. This collection of songs on CD2 has been thought about to give a wide variety of his 23 years producing fine songs. The Best Of David Gray (Deluxe Edition) (CD2) This is a really good album and deserves to be in your collection. ![]() I would estimate that they never grew up but I would also say the same of much older bands like The Rolling Stones and nobody knocks them for 60 years of ripped off blues.įavourite tracks for me are "Amputation", "All Things Pass", "Always Sad", "The Two Of Us", "Get On Home" & "Facing Up To The Facts" Full of attitude that defies their years. ![]() I came to this "Damage And Joy" with fresh ears and no bias as to what I expected nor wanted to hear. Some old fans love it for that because "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and I'm not one of those. Described as same old same old by early fans. I was spoiled for choice back in the 80's and never gave this band much of a chance. I say great to new ears as I never got on board the JAMC train when they were originally in the airwaves. ![]()
